Metal Stoker

Every system has those hidden gems that nobody seems to talk about but actually represent some of the best games on the system and when it comes to the PC Engine Metal Stoker is the very first one of these I would mention. The undoubted quality of this game is perhaps even more surprising when you consider that it was developed and published by a company I have never even heard of in Face. In essence Metal Stoker is a top down shooter that is somewhat reminiscent of the Atari arcade game Vindicators in some ways. In the game you control a tank that must move around each level locating and then defeating all the enemy vehicles and gun placements. You can wither fix the cannon of your tank in a single direction as you move or freely rotate it, which take a while to get the hang of but works very well once you do. There are also power-ups that can be collected in order to improve your tank and change over to a much more powerful one. Levels scroll in all eight directions and take place in a wide variety of different locations too. Graphically Metal Stoker is pretty slick with great use of colour and really well-defined sprites. The audio isn’t half bad either with some nice tunes and great sound effects too. Overall Metal Stoker is one of those games that you will come back to time after time whenever you have an itchy trigger finger or just want to play something a bit more original.
